WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug to treat men's erectile dysfunction. But it hasn't been tested on people with heart disease.
U. S. regulators in a fight over a drug to treat impotence are blocking a program that has been run by the drug company Pfizer. It could cost the same as $7.30 a month, or $9.30 a pill.
Pfizer's about the drug, called Viagra, made it to the U. market after the FDA granted approval to two other erectile dysfunction drugs, sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis).
Viagra has been available in pill form since 1998. But a new study by the Food and Drug Administration suggests that the company could charge more.
"The new findings do not support a recommendation to discontinue use of Viagra or any other PDE5 inhibitor," said Dr. Jorge Puente, the FDA's director of public affairs. "We hope the Food and Drug Administration will take action to stop the use of sildenafil or tadalafil."
The new information was submitted to the agency's Web site, www.fda.gov/drugs. There is also a link to a Web site that offers Viagra's Web site at http://www.fda.gov. It also offers the drug's Web site at www.topdrugs.com. Viagra is the only drug approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
"Our hope is that this information will be used by those with health insurance to help patients pay for their medicines," said Dr. Paul G. Thompson, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "This is just one example of our hope."
Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Pfizer has said it won't cover the cost of Viagra for patients with heart disease, although it has said it will cover it for impotence.
The agency has also given a final approval to another drug, tadalafil, to treat men's erectile dysfunction. The FDA also approved it for treating men with pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs.
The company said that it has not approved a new drug to treat impotence or ED, and that it has not received final approval from the FDA for treating impotence.

Pfizer has said it won't cover the cost of Viagra for patients with heart disease, but a separate report from a company review said the FDA has not received a recommendation to stop using Viagra or any other PDE5 inhibitor.A separate FDA review of two drugs to treat impotence said it would not cover the cost of Viagra for patients with heart disease, but a separate review of the drugs showed they were not effective. But an FDA review of three other PDE5 inhibitors found that they were not effective and that they did not cause sexual dysfunction.
Pfizer said it hasn't approved the drugs for treating ED. "While the information we have received from this study is reassuring, the overall recommendation is based on the current available data and the available data for other PDE5 inhibitors," the FDA said in a statement.
The study found that patients taking sildenafil or tadalafil who took Viagra had fewer sexual events than patients taking a placebo.
Researchers said the drug was effective for some men who had erectile dysfunction, but not for those who had heart disease. But they said the results don't mean that it wouldn't work for everyone. Viagra is not approved for treating erectile dysfunction, and the FDA has not approved any of its approved drugs for treating impotence.
The FDA approved two other drugs for treating impotence. But the agency said it hasn't approved any of its approved drugs to treat ED.Viagra is a FDA approved prescription medication for the management of erectile dysfunction. It helps enhance blood flow, supporting erectile function during sexual activity.
